WASHINGTON -- Offshore oil facility owners have run into strong opposition from the Coast Guard over their attempts to force Senate amendments to certain provisions of the main federal oil pollution law.

The oil industry is seeking changes in the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90) similar to those they garnered in the House in May. As part of the Coast Guard Authorization Act, the requirement that offshore facilities show they are covered for oil spill cleanup costs of up to $150 million was reduced to $35 million.
