Ride in the combine cab during corn harvest with Jimmy Rainey and you quickly see he's no rookie Southern corn grower lured to the crop by surging 2007 markets. He's an old hand at it, in fact.
"I've been growing corn all my life, so I do have bins and plenty of trucks. It's a good crop for me," he says. Farming 7,000 acres in northwest Tennessee, near a grain terminal on the Mississippi River, he's situated in a relatively good corn area. Traditionally, he grows cotton and soybeans, as well, and sometimes wheat. The price differential last spring made him re-evaluate cropping plans, however.
