Among the hundreds of letters I have answered over the years while serving time in jails and prisons in Wisconsin, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota, a recent letter asked a question often put to me in different ways: "What is your rationale for spending a year and a half in the joint? That's more determination than I have."
I had to smile because that letter was from the editor of this magazine. During my four years as editor of the Bulletin in the mid-1970s, a time of painful struggle to promote better public understanding of the awesome effects of nuclear weapons, no one asked for my rationale or complimented me on my determination.
