TEACHER unions are worried about the steady decline in the matric pass rate over the past five years, but education authorities said it was the number of pupils who passed that counted and not the percentages.
While the number of candidates writing the KwaZulu-Natal senior certificate has increased by 50 000 since 2003, the pass rate percentage has dropped from 77.2 to 63.8% this year.
KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC, Ina Cronje, said the number of pupils who had passed this year had increased compared with last year.
