As the reverberations of elation, surprise and shock of the 52nd national conference of the African National Congress at Polokwane slowly subside, it is an appropriate time to take stock of its implications for South Africa's fledging democracy.

The first point to make in any post-Polokwane audit of the state of democracy is that a peaceful change in the leadership of any ruling party is a positive development, particularly in a country where one party dominates the state as it does in South Africa.
