When I walked in, my dog started jumping up and down. So did the ancient TV set he was tied to.

Johnny was talking to a customer. He raised a finger to let me know he'd be with me in a minute. I freed the dog from the piece of twine that anchored him to the television set, pulled a leash from my pocket and anchored him to me.

Then Johnny "TV" Peluso and I had a talk.

It was overdue. I'd been giving Johnny and some of his friends a hard time ever since I'd left the Cincinnati Post to be the managing editor of The Kentucky Post -- the only newspaper that took my community seriously.
