SIR JAMES GOLDSMITH has always liked a gamble. While still a schoolboy, he won Pounds 8,000 ($12,000) on a Pounds 10 accumulator and used the proceeds to abscond from Eton. This Anglo-French billionaire's latest bet, financing a new political party with the sole aim of forcing a referendum on union with Europe, could cost him a bit more.
Sir James says he will spend "whatever it takes" to run candidates in every constituency in the next British general election. He will make exceptions only for sitting MPs who are committed to holding a referendum--so long as they are not the sort of wishy-washy Liberal Democrats he despises.
