How would you feel if your expenses increased 1600% in one year? This scenario could have become reality because of an increase in one expense that many in the ceramic industry encounter. It is the hazardous materials (hazmat) fee, an annual fee that all shippers and carriers of hazardous materials must pay to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to help fund its hazardous materials transportation program.
In 1992, DOT proposed raising the fee from $300 to $5050, but took no action to finalize the increase. In May of this year, DOT issued a final rule squashing the increase and leaving the fee at $300.
