THE ROCK IS SOLD TO A PRIVATE BIDDER

THERE are two main contenders in the race to buy Northern Rock, Sir Richard Branson's Virgin consortium and former Abbey boss Luqman Arnold's private investment firm Olivant.

In both cases the question is whether they will be able to get enough finance together and persuade shareholders to accept the offer.
