During the last nine months, two senators and two representatives have changed their party affiliation to Republican. Out of 535 members of Congress, this might not seem like much, but it has made the 104th Congress the leader in the modern era for lawmakers switching parties. The erstwhile Democrats are Alabama conservative Richard Shelby and Ben Nighthorse Campbell of Colorado, a maverick centrist, in the Senate. In the House, Nathan Deal of Georgia and Greg Laughlin of Texas have joined the GOP.
