FDA publishes proposed rule on omega-3 fatty acids.(WASHINGTON)

FDA published a proposed rule on nutrient content claims for foods, including both conventional foods and dietary supplements, that contain the omega-3 fatty acids alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and/or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). 72 Fed. Reg. 66103 (Nov. 27, 2007). Comments on the proposed rule are due no later than Feb. 11, 2008.

Under the proposed rule, all nutrient content claims for EPA and DHA would be prohibited. FDA would continue to permit "good source," "excellent source," and "more" claims for ALA based on a daily value of 1.6 milligrams (mg).
