May apparel imports from Mexico soar but China regains top spot in SME. (square meters equivalent)

Clothing and textile imports from Mexico rose almost 80% in May, 1995, to 69 million square meters equivalent (SME), but China was the top importer for the month with 73 million SME. Overall textile and apparel imports to the US increased 17% in May to 1.57 billion SME. The North American Free Trade Agreement has helped boost Mexican imports, with some categories, such as cotton knit shirts seeing growth of over 100%.
