Yobs assaulted 378 police officers in two-and-a-half years. Now police chiefs are calling for courts to issue tough sentences which will deter offenders.

Figures from Northumbria Police show that from April 2006 to last March, 160 officers were assaulted and 153 arrests made.

There were 50 more attacks until November.

Between April 2005 and 2006, there were 168 assaults, which saw 164 offenders brought to justice.

However, the true picture could be even grimmer as more serious offences, such as grievous bodily harm or robbery, are not included in the statistics.
