As he states in the Preface, Edwin Williamson planned to dedicate some four and a half years to the preparation of his biography of Jorge Luis Borges, but the project ended up taking him twice that amount of time. In his search for the soul and the character of the great Argentine writer, he has examined new sources of biographical material and has pondered long on what compelled Borges to be a writer, developing many new insights around which he has structured his conjectural version of what the innermost passions and motivations of that long life--singularly dedicated to literature--might have been.
