To be sure, there's plenty of room for improvement, along with plenty of unanswered questions, in the proposed acquisition of Verizon's landline telephone business in northern New England by FairPoint Communications. Chief among the concerns should be that large parts of the telecommunications infrastructures of New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont have been put in a vulnerable position, thanks to a company that has essentially been an uncaring absentee landlord for far too many years.
