The House Financial Services Committee in November approved a bill designed to improve mortgage servicing standards and enhance real estate appraisal independence.
Passed by voice vote less than a month after it was filed, the Escrow, Appraisal and Mortgage Servicing Improvements Act (H.R. 3837) establishes enforceable national appraisal independence standards with penalties, improves federal oversight of state appraisal regulators, and strengthens appraiser licensing and education standards.
