THE mother of tragic chess champion Philip Hogarty has forgiven thegarda driver who knocked him downand invited members of the force to his funeral.

Philip, 19, died of head injuries in hospital after being struck by the patrolcar in the early hours of New Years Day just five minutes from his home inTallaght, west Dublin.

His mother Kay, who is preparing to bury him today, said yesterday: I cantbelieve hes gone but I feel sorry for the poor garda who hit him. It doesntmatter to us whether it was a garda or a plumber.
