Andre Malraux maintained that a painter's first creative impulse comes not directly from nature but from some preceding work of art. This was especially true of the painter Robert De Niro, who lived a solitary existence shut off from the world, totally dedicated to the spirit of Rembrandt, Delacroix, Daumier, Corot, Manet Cezanne, Bonnard and Matisse. Postcard reproductions of their works surrounded him. Their compositions aided him in his own work.
