The governments of Syria and Iraq on Dec. 17 agreed to reopen the 250,000 b/d crude oil pipeline linking Kirkuk oilfields to Syria's Mediterranean port city of Banias. The pipeline should be ready within two years. Is the US behind this, to reward Damascus for a better check of its border with Iraq and stopping the flow into Iraq of Neo-Salafi volunteers?
The deal was included in the minutes of bilateral meetings signed by Syrian Deputy PM for Economic Affairs Abdullah Dardari and his Iraqi counterpart Barham Ahmad Saleh, a Kurd close to President Talabani, covering co-operation between Syria and Iraq in the fields of transport, oil, gas, banks, infrastructure, ...
