World first as champion for older people is appointed.(News)

Wales' growing number of over-60s can make an absolutely vital contribution to the nation's future prosperity, says the world's first ever Commissioner for Older People. Today's announcement that Ruth Marks has been appointed to the pounds 87,000-a-year post has been hailed as a historic milestone in the battle against age discrimination.

Ms Marks, who is director of RNIB Cymru, takes up her new role in April. Her appointment follows a long campaign to get a powerful independent voice for older people in Wales.
