Col. Tony Thomas, a senior US commander in northern Iraq, says Neo-Salafi insurgents are conducting more attacks in the north-eastern province of Diyala - including a recent attack by a woman suicide bomber - Mosul and Samarra'. He says he would welcome additional US troops to help combat the violence, particularly for Diyala, which is his "main effort".
The US attributes the improving security environment to the impact of the surge, but also the "Awakening Council" in Anbar where Sunni tribal shaikhs joined forces with US troops to fight al-Qaeda.
