This volume, the product of a 1988 conference sponsored by the Folger Shakespeare Library, focuses much-needed attention on the culture of the Jacobean Court. Divided into three major parts that explore politics, court culture, and literature and art, the book's interpretive essays encourage further research into a field too often overshadowed by the reign of Elizabeth and the era of the Civil War. By distinguishing Jacobean court culture from both its predecessor and successor, the contributors have placed special emphasis on the early years of the first Stuart monarch.
