Mass beauty manufacturers are bemoaning the departure of many retail cosmetics buyers from the scene, resulting in new difficulties getting their products to the customer. Buyers, for their part, cite increasing consolidation in the drugstore industry, added responsibilities that increase paperwork rather than relationship-building, and continuous personnel downsizing as stresses that have left them burned out. Several key buyers have left major chains for the distribution side of the business, others have left altogether and others have switched to less stressful categories.
