Superalloys demand this decade continues to glide 25% lower than it did in the 1980s. Reason: Superalloys sales depend on aviation and, "This is the great aerospace recession," according to sales VP Tom McDonald at Special Metals Corp. in New Hartford, N.Y. That's why last year's 6% pickup in net sales to 107 million lb is considered a minor blip caused by some inventory restocking by jet engine spare parts and components makers. That's also why sales slippage back to the 105 million-ton region is projected for this year and next.
