I've spent quite a bit of time recently reflecting on the changing fortunes of St Chad's Cathedral. Not only is it one of the few Birmingham buildings designed by a nationally important architect - Augustus Pugin - but it had the remarkable distinction of being the first Roman Catholic cathedral to be built in England following the Reformation (consecrated as a church in 1841, given cathedral status in 1850).
