A sigh of reliever Gossage, in ninth year on ballot, first Colorado native to be elected.(Sports)

The call finally came Tuesday, ending a long wait for Goose Gossage and delivering, with an impact he couldn't possibly predict, the giddy news he had been elected to the Hall of Fame.

"It was like being hit with a brick," Gossage said. "I mean, my head just went numb. I haven't even had time to reflect or even think about it, but I just know the feeling. It was crushing."

Gossage, the first Colorado native elected to the Hall, was at his Colorado Springs home when Jack O'Connell, secretary-treasurer of the Baseball Writers' Association of America, phoned with his euphoric greeting.
