Fish oil improves motor skills in children with phenylketonuria.(Literature Review & Commentary)(Brief article)

Thirty-six patients (aged one to eleven years) with phenylketonuria (PKU) received fish oil (18% eicosapentaenoic acid and 12% docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]), providing DHA at a dose of 15 mg per kg of body weight per day for three months. At baseline, as compared with age-matched controls, PKU patients had low concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids in plasma phospholipids and a poorer mean performance on a measure of body coordination and fine motor skills (Rostock-Oseretzky Scale motor development index, 107 vs. 117; p = 0.01).
