After years of blowing away major-league hitters, Rich "Goose" Gossage was the one who felt overpowered on Tuesday.
"It was like being hit with a brick," Gossage said in a conference call from his home in Colorado. "My head was just numb."
That was Gossage's reaction to finding out he was the only player elected this year to the Baseball Hall of Fame, becoming the fifth relief pitcher to earn the honor.
Gossage, probably best known as the intimidating closer for the New York Yankees from 1978 to 1983, was chosen in his ninth year on the Baseball Writers' Association of America ballot. He received ...
