It's necessary to guard against magnifying the importance of the Iowa caucuses: They attract a low turnout of voters who are not representative of the national electorate. Yet something significant happened in Iowa Thursday night, with results that will reverberate through the presidential nominating process and beyond. Republicans and Democrats alike showed a restlessness, a hunger for authenticity, and a dissatisfaction with stale messages. Iowa's results may not be replicated in New Hampshire next Tuesday and in later primaries and caucuses, but the next president will be the one who can capture the spirit that was at work Thursday.
