A MUCH-LOVED family man and senior figure in the British military died suddenly this week.
Air Chief Marshal Sir John Willis, 70, of Belvedere Terrace, Alnwick, had an outstanding career in the RAF and held the second highest position any UK serviceman could reach as Vice Chief of the Defence Staff.
After retiring from service he moved to Alnwick where he became a renowned and much-respected member of the community.
Formerly of London, Sir John met his wife Merrill, 70, there in 1959 when she was a nurse and he was in the RAF.
They had been married for 48 years and retired together to Alnwick in 1998.
