Routines and their accompanying rules must be established in the first few weeks of school. Setting routines early allows the teacher to communicate her expectations to her students and gradually, will generate the behaviors expected of both the students and the teacher.
What is the best thing to do during the first few weeks with a class? This is an important question for beginning teachers (Amarel and Feiman-Nemser 1988) and an ongoing concern for many more experienced teachers.
