Peter de Villiers's appointment as the new Springbok coach was based entirely on merit, according to SA Rugby Union (Saru) deputy president Mike Stofile.
Stofile, who chaired the committee that interviewed the four candidates vying for the post - De Villiers, Heyneke Meyer, Allister Coetzee and Chester Williams - said: "There are people who are saying that Peter de Villiers's selection as the new Springbok coach is a transformation appointment.
"That is not the case at all.
"Peter has got excellent ability as a coach and his appointment was made purely on merit."
