Victoria, B.C. -- Under Section 293 of the Criminal Code, polygamy has been illegal since 1892 but there have been few prosecutions. The issue has come to the fore recently in British Columbia where, for over 60 years, a community of fundamentalist Mormons has been established in the town of Bountiful. This is a breakaway group from the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in Utah, U.S.A. after the main group abolished polygamy in 1890 (Editor: Despite their name, Mormons are not Christians).
