HONOLULU -- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors generally tend to be effective first-line treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder, Julia M. Whealin, Ph.D., reported at the annual meeting of the National Medical Association.
Dr. Whealin compared results from recently published studies with those from older ones. She is deputy director for education, and research health scientist, at the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Pacific Islands division, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Pacific Islands Health Care Systems.
Dr. Whealin first pointed to studies of patients with PTSD published in 2000 (n = 187) and 2001 (n = 208).
