Two top European diplomats are set to leave Afghanistan on Dec 27 amid allegations that they had held unauthorised talks with the Taliban. The Afghan government said the two men from the UN and the EU are being expelled because they had threatened national security. Michael Semple, the second most senior official working for the EU mission, and Mervyn Patterson, a UN expert on tribal relations, had been working together in the town of Musa Qala, the former Taliban stronghold in Helmand province which was recaptured by Afghan and international forces earlier this month.
