MANCHESTER, N.H. -- I knew old-fashioned retail politics was alive and well in New Hampshire this year when I got close enough to Hillary Clinton to shake her hand, look her square in the eye and say "the F word" to her.

Every four years, political-junkie friends and I go on vacation to New Hampshire in primary season to try to shake hands with the next president, trying to make sure by shaking hands with all the Democrat and Republican contenders and pretenders.

We have fun. We learn things about candidates that you can't get from TV. And, without sounding grandiose, as a group of ordinary citizens without press credentials or campaign ...
