Jul. 23--A lot of Florida natives probably will be dubious about this. And most Florida transplants definitely won't buy it. But the much-maligned Florida tomato really can taste as good as those grown up North.
It's just that precious little of Florida's huge tomato crop is ever allowed to ripen to its full-flavored best.
So the few tomatoes left to get ruby red on their own are scarfed up by a handful of produce stands, consumed at the dinner tables of those who grow them or, most often, thrown away in the fields as unmarketable.
Crazy? You bet. But that's the economics that have driven the evolution of Florida's $430 million-a-year tomato industry.
