CHICHESTER'S rich archaeological soil is under the microscope once again as land by the east walls is being prepared for excavation.

As the demolition work on the Eastgate Square development project starts, archaeological work is being done to ensure remains, possibly dating back 12,000 years, are best preserved.

Although much of the earth has been disturbed by the previous foundations, it is likely some areas may have remained unspoiled and could be rich in medieval or Roman remains.

Seawards Properties archaeological consultant Chris Pine has hailed the region as one of the best historical areas in the country.
