As a result of responsible care, the chemical industry has taken on a much higher profile in local communities. This has meant coming to terms with the press, a traditional foe. Still, improvements with media dealings are spotty--some firms still take an adversarial approach--and both camps remain wary in their dealings with the each other.
"The relationship now is much healthier," says Rae Tyson, environment editor at USA Today (Arlington, VA). "When approached, industry is more honest, depending of course on the subject. They are much more willing to make experts available."
