Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB), Dendroctonus ponderosae, is a member of a group of beetles known as bark beetles, native to the forests of western North America from Mexico to central British Columbia. Periodic outbreaks of MPB result in the loss of millions of trees. Except when adults emerge and attack new trees, the MPB completes its life cycle under the bark.

What does it look like?
MPB is a small insect, less than a centimeter long, and can be distinguished from other bark beetles by the shape of its hind wing cover. In a side view, it is gradually curved.
