A federal judge on Tuesday sentenced Texas oilman Oscar Wyatt to one year and one day in federal prison, well below federal sentencing guidelines, for paying kickbacks under the UN oil-for-food program.
An emotional Wyatt, 83, told the court before sentencing that, "My opinions, in many ways, probably caused me to skirt too close to the law and for that I was wrong and for that I am truly sorry."
Judge Denny Chin said he deviated from the 18 to 24 months sentencing guideline agreed to in the plea deal as he took into account Wyatt's age, his poor health and the numerous "acts of patriotism" he displayed over the course of his life. Wyatt served in World ...
