THE DHSS is to examine the costs of setting up a new scheme to pay the costs of residential and nursing care after retirement.

A scheme championed by Peter Karran could see new class of National Insurance contribution set up for people born after 1980 that would pay for a place in a nursing or residential home if needed after retirement.

It is a move that has been introduced successfully in the Channel Islands but support for the idea in Tynwald came as something of a shock for Mr Karran (LibVan, Onchan) who had been resigned to seeing his motion fail.
