Making An Impact
Over 100 years ago, Dr. W.C. Van Bibber designated St. Petersburg, Florida "Health City" because of its year-round warm climate and waters. In addition to its great fishing and boating, this "healthy" resort town sought out diverse activities to attract visitors from the north. "Tourist Sports" were developed and organized that kept visitors coming to the city year-after-year, spurring economic growth and development. It began with Horseshoe tournaments in 1909. Lawn Bowling was organized in 1915. Yet, the biggest deal came in 1916. Led by Al Lang, St. Petersburg's first Mayor, professional sports was brought to the city. Baseballs spring training ...
