If estate agents' hyperbolic prose in property advertisements is anything to go by, people definitely prefer "architect-designed" houses - so why shouldn't the Lesser Flamingo also choose a designer home?

These beautiful birds have made history at Kamfers Dam, just outside Kimberley, by starting to breed on an artificially created ... um, make that architect-designed ... island in this large, permanent wetland that is a proclaimed Natural Heritage Site and Important Bird Area.

The dam supports the most important permanent population of Lesser Flamingoes in southern Africa, usually more than 25 ...
