Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church officials are asking D.C. transportation officials to add a safety feature to slow traffic, after several recent incidents in which pedestrians have either been hit or narrowly avoided being hit by a vehicle outside, on Rhode Island Avenue Northeast.

Leroy Atkins, of the church at 610 Rhode Island Ave. Northeast, says the vehicles routinely go faster than the 30 mph limit.

"Nobody's doing anything about it," he said.

Mr. Atkins said that in the past year, "five or six people," mostly elderly adults, have been hit and hospitalized.
