Currents of cool, clear water caress an 18-inch, black-spotted LAHONTAN CUTTHROAT TROUT (Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi) as she guards her newly-deposited eggs. As an insectivorous and piscivorous species, her mate is foraging nearby for aquatic insects and smaller fish. Spring arrived late this year so spawning didn't take place until July when water temperature and flow seemed most suitable. During spawning, the female digs a series of "redds", or nests, in the riffles along the gravel stream bottom for her eggs. ...
