THE film studio behind South Shields-born director Sir Ridley Scott's latest hit is being sued.
Former Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agents Jack Toal, Gregory Korniloff and Louis Diaz have filed a $50m ([pounds sterling]25m) libel claim on behalf of more than 400 former and current drug squad officers in the New York area, saying hit film American Gangster falsely made them out to be villains.
The NBC Universal film, also produced by Sir Ridley, tells the story of New York heroin trafficker Frank Lucas, played by Denzel Washington, and has already picked up a cluster of Golden Globe and Bafta nominations.
