In developing a new imaging system for telescopes, astronomers at SDSU had more than just stars in their eyes. They also saw dollar signs.
SDSU astronomer Robert W. Leach developed the system, called a charged coupled device (CCD) camera, for telescopes at the university's Mount Laguna Observatory.
But it proved to be such a popular device, the school has sold it to 20 other observatories around the world - including the Keck Observatory in Hawaii, home of a 400-inch telescope, the world's largest.
Sales have brought in $300,000, which has been invested back into SDSU's astronomy department.
