MICHAEL LIND'S new book has received hosannas from almost all sides. The New York Times called it `a pleasure to read.' The San Francisco Chronicle described it as `brilliantly provocative.' And even reviewers who had serious reservations found much to praise, as for instance Peter Skerry in the Wilson Quarterly. Noting nervously that Mr. Lind echoed the arguments against American exceptionalism made by this reviewer, Mr. Skerry quickly added the reassurance that `he builds his case on a subtler, more persuasive understanding of American culture.' Ah well, John Simon once saw Rex Reed described as `the thinking man's John Simon.' There's always someone worse off than ...
