In 1453 Borso d'Este, Marquess of Ferrara, was created Duke of Modena and Reggio--territories falling within the confines of the Holy Roman Empire--by Emperor Friedrich III Habsburg. On Easter day 1471, five months before his death, he obtained from Pope Paolo II Barbo the elevation of the marquisate of Ferrara to a duchy. These two hierarchical advances placed the House of Este in a special position within the ranking of Italian dynasties, inferior only to the Aragonese Kings of Naples and to the Dukes of Milan and Savoy. They also reveal the special juridical position of the family, as both imperial and papal fiefholders.
